Thankyou for your interest in our passed fundraiser event, which was on 12 Oct 2024.

Who are we?

We are a Wildlife Shelter in the Bunurong Ward of the Bass Coast Shire in Victoria.

Caring for wildlife from coastal and inland waters, coastline vegetation, farmlands and forests. We care for all species, except snakes.

Vision: ’Our home for a rest, BUT their forever home is best’

Simple to say, yet so complex to bring our vision to reality.

We have 20+ very active Shelter Helpers, who share in both the grotty and glamorous care tasks.

While we share most tasks, we also have specialist roles for feed preparation, joey handing and for animals requiring critical care & medical management.

What are we fundraising for?

A vet grade Koala enclosure for our critical care room, such as the example below. ~ $5,000

Oliver’s Story:

Oliver was given a second chance at life by the heroic effort that his mother took to protect him from stampeding cattle, who had been spooked as she attempted to cross an open field from one habitat location to another.

Crossing open ground is fraught with danger for tree dwelling wildlife and Oliver’s story reinforces the vital importance of wildlife habitat corridors, with linking tree canopy, both on private & public land.
Sadly, Oliver’s mother was critically injured and could not be saved, but her Joey was taken into Bunurong Wildlife Care and a plan established for his rehabilitation journey that involved many stakeholders.

Rehabilitation

To rehabilitate a koala, special care is needed to ensure their gut flora is established for their release back to the wild. This involves species-specific foliage collection and scat monitoring. Oliver was in care for many months and when he reached his release weight, with all other milestones established, he was successfully released. Unfortunately, the reality is that more and more Koalas are coming into care due to habitat loss, road trauma, domestic dogs and urban sprawl.
