Indigenous vs Native

Native is a term commonly used to refer to plants that come from anywhere in Australia.

Indigenous (local native) plants are locally unique.

For example, certain Queensland plants are native to Australia, but not native to the Bass Coast or South Gippsland regions.

Both local wildlife & indigenous plants have adapted to survive & thrive in their local environment.

For example, local koalas may have adapted to eat & digest indigenous foliage that koalas from other regions couldn’t eat.

Hence, when considering wildlife when planting, it’s important to consider indigenous flora, rather than just native.
